Seaside Sewing & Quilts opened in 2011 by Jeannette Carter in New Smyrna Beach, FL.
After working at the Kennedy Space Center and a software company and the local Presbyterian Church in New Smyrna Beach, I decided to do something fun and less stressful. Little did I know that it would be so much fun but challenging too. I went from solving technical issues with computers to solving technical issues with quilting.
My husband of 50 years just thought he was retiring from his Engineering job to goof off and just fish. Little did he know that he would be part of the shop and basically take over the Longarm Quilting. He will tell you that he doesn’t know a lick about sewing but he can quilt your quilts for you! Our ladies love being able to tell their friends that their quilter is a man.
My journey with my shop has been a learning experience and sometimes challenging. I decided to move Seaside after 10 years in New Smyrna to a smaller shop in Edgewater in 2021 with smaller overhead expenses plus a bonus of moving nearer to my home.
We have about 1,200 square feet, half of which is our retail section with fabric, notions and patterns. One forth of that is our Gammill Longarm who is affectionately named “Fernando”, and the rest is set up for classes.
We have open sewing with machines on Wednesday and Friday where you can work on any project. On Thursdays we have “Sit and Stitch” which is open to anyone not using a machine. You can join us for any hand project or come and cut out a pattern. We ask that you call ahead to reserve a seat since we have limited space.
We have had Jenny Doan from the Missouri Star come in 2014 and present a Trunk Show. I was able to pack 85 women in my little shop in New Smyrna Beach.
We have had bus trips with other participating shops, busses to Jacksonville and a car pool event down to Melbourne to attend an Eleanor Burns event.
We may be small but we are always trying to accommodate and present new ideas to our customers.
Since COVID we have reduced our hours to Tuesday to Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. but stay open for special events and of course any Shop Hops we are participating in. So make a point to stop by and see our little shop on the corner while you’re hopping around Florida this spring!
